When it comes to real wood flooring, there is an amazing choice of different products you want to consider. First of all, we have different types of real wood flooring – you can choose between solid wood, engineered wood, and parquet flooring. Solid wood floorboards are cut from a single piece of timber. On the contrary, engineered wood is a more advanced product where every floorboard is structured from a core of crisscrossed softwood layers topped with a hardwood layer called lamella. Finally, parquet flooring refers to the specific arrangement of this type of flooring, structured and assembled by smaller wooden pieces that are installed in a certain way to create a geometric and symmetric pattern.
The classic wooden floorboard comes with a thickness between 90 mm and 300 mm in width. Depending on your personal style and interior preferences, you can choose the width that best meets your expectations and create different effects by playing around with different floorboard widths. Furthermore, hardwood floorboards are available either with a built-in tongue-and-groove system or straight-edged. Straight edged floorboards are the more classic and traditional choice and they are usually glued down to the subfloor during installation. Tongue-and-groove floorboards are the most contemporary and advanced option. The built-in system allows for easier and seamless installation where the floor looks more uniform when fitted and the overall stability is increased. Tongue-and-groove also allow for faster and easier installation of the floorboards.
When it comes to the installation of real wood floorboards, there are three main methods of fitting – nail-down, glue-down, or floating installation. As the name suggests, the nail-down installation consists of nailing the floorboards down to the subfloor or an underlayment. This is a classic installation method that allows great stability and solidness of the floor. However, keep in mind that most nail-down installation requires additional installation of an underlay underneath the floorboards. Glue-down installation involves the usage of strong and high-quality adhesive that fixes the floorboards to the subfloor or the underlayment. Finally, floating installation does not require the usage of adhesive or nails. It is often preferred for engineered wood floorboards and for all situations when the subfloor cannot be levelled for some reason.
Every durable and lasting hardwood floor is a product of two aspects – high-quality floorboards and proper preparation before the installation of the floorboards. The best preparation stage involves a few steps. First of all, hardwood floorboards should be left to acclimatise to their new environment, which means leaving them on-site and out of their transportation package for a week or up to two weeks. This step may seem easy to neglect, however, it is very important because it will help you prevent excessive shrinking, expanding, and contracting of the floorboards due to the effect of unstable humidity and indoor moisture levels, as well as temperature fluctuations.
Besides the acclimatization of the floorboards, you should make sure that the subfloor is in perfect condition and ready for the installation service too. Professional hardwood floorboards installers will take care of the subfloor by properly inspecting its condition, doing all the required moisture checks, making sure it is complete, clean, stable, solid, and level and even enough. Sometimes even with professional help, the subfloor cannot be in perfect condition. The worry now, a layer of high-quality underlayment is often enough to work as a moisture-barrier, level the subfloor and make it more even, and also provide additional advantages such as increasing the insulation of your home and ensuring sound-proofing properties.
